Play To WinBy Mikel R. Virdell…recording the history of the Fighting Llano Yellowjackets since 1973. In 1973, new Llano Coach Ken Gray took over the Llano football program. The Yellowjackets went 7-2-1 in regular season play, and won the District Championship with a 5-0 record. The first playoff game was against Bastrop, ranked 4th in State polls. Llano
won
the game 7-0, with a nightmare of a game, as Llano’s defense had its backs
to the wall for what seemed like 48 minutes! But the defense never let down for a
moment, and the Jackets were headed to their first play-off game victory in history. The following week Llano played the number one team in the State, Friendswood. Ken Gray, in his first year as head coach, was the first coach to win a play-off game. And for that matter, the first to win two play-off games! Coach David Yeagor, in his first season in Llano, is only the second coach in history to win in his first year a play-off game. Beating Cuero Friday would place him next to Gray. Gray’s play-off record as head coach for three seasons was 2-2. Coach Karl McCormack won three play-off games from 1997-99…. taking Llano to the Area game each season. McCormack coached the most play-off games in history with 7, and a play-off record of 3-4. Season Team Rushing Yards 1994…3411 yards…576 carries…Ave. 5.9 Yds.
