Play To Win

By Mikel R. Virdell…recording the history of the Fighting Llano Yellowjackets since 1973.

The 2005 season had to have been a surprise to many. And I speak not of the 8-4 record, which was superb, but I speak of the quality of play…the soundness of the offense, and the improved play of the defense.

While the Jackets turned in an 8-2 record in 2004, there was only one real bright spot, and that being the victory over a very good Wimberley team. And the Others wins were suspect. Most of the squads were young and a year away from being very good. Yet Llano’s margin of victory was slight.
And then the disappointment of not making the playoffs after losing to an inferior Brady team was just about as depressing as it gets. The Players played hard, but intense work and discipline were absent many times.

The 2005 team not only faced a new head coach, but a new offense that featured running the football, and a defense that meant gang tackeling, and disciplined assignments. All new to 14 seniors that had to step up and be leaders in a system untested and yet still to be learned in Llano.

The fact that 6 teams that Llano played out of 12, made it to the 4th round of the State Playoffs is just remarkable. This tells us that those 2004 teams matured, and played very sound football. Llano beat two of those teams, Blanco and Comfort. Blanco is playing in the 5th round of the playoffs, as are Cuero and Wimberley. Early, Liberty Hill, and Comfort lost in round four.

But what the 2005 team gave back to Llano and this community was hope. Hope for a better time, and left with a core group of players that will have the opportunity to be really special. The 2006 team has an opportunity to be very good.

The running game returns 8 players and 2909 yards of rushing offense. This sounds like I am writing about Liberty Hill. The offensive line takes some major hits with seniors graduating, but four returnees will be good. The JV has lineman that can be very good. The 2006 team has a chance to be very good.
Several players from 2005 will get their names into the record books. With the help of many of you, as your contributions are helping me to continue to improve on the accuracy of the Llano records, changes will be seen. Soon these changes will show up on my web-site, and please send me corrections when you see errors.
