Play To Win

By Mikel R. Virdell…recording the history of the Fighting Llano Yellowjackets since 1973.

The cancellation of the game Friday night may have been a first.

Llano received the opening kick-off, and Estevan Aviles returned it 8 yards to the 21 yardline.  On first down senior Clayton Maples went 60 yards off the right side for a Jacket first down and Llano’s longest run of the season.  That was followed by a two yard run by junior Jordan Cavness, and Maples toped off the drive with a 17 yard scamper into the end zone for the TD.  Then the game was called off off due to lighning. The teams were sent to the locker rooms to wait out the lightning show that followed for well over an hour, in which everyone was sent home to not play again. Everything was cancelled, and so do the stats and Llano’s 7-0 lead.

Llano needed to play this game, and Llano needed the win to get the Jackets ready for more tough play ahead.  It will not get any tougher than this week as the Jackets travel to Bandera. Llano beat Bandera in Llano last year by the score of 0   to  0….It could be just as close this year.   Bandera has one of the top quarterbacks in Central Texas in Cole Hubble, 6-3, 215 pounds, 4.6 speed.  He won their game last week by returning a missed field goal try with no time left on the clock.  105 yards!  Hubble is the real deal.  He was the best quarterback Llano faced last season.  He likely will be the best Llano sees this year. Last season Hubble threw for 31 TD passes, and ran for another 1,600 plus yards.  According to one Bandera coach, several Division 1 schools are watching this fine senior.

Bandera made the playoffs last year, and they are picked to win their district 29-3AAA this year.  They did play a full game Friday night, and now stand at 1-1 for the season.  Hubble broke his nose in the opening game, and played little.  It did not affect him Friday night.  Again, Llano needs to play.  And this week they will have to play very good to win.

The following week Llano will be back at Jacket Stadium against the hottest back in Central Texas, Mark Jackson.  Jackson won the State long jump this past spring, and has run a 4.38 I the 40.  He can beat you in so many ways.  His five touchdowns last week against Manor has the Ducks at 2-0 now early in the season.

The next week, Llano will be open, but district play begins for the other 6 teams.  Wimberley is still picked to win it all.  With Canyon Lake at 2-0, they may not catch anyone sleeping this year, but I still see them winning at least 3 district games.  Llano will have that week off to think about how to beat Burnet, Liberty Hill and Fredericksburg.
