October 13, 2003.

Patton is gone…gone, gone gone. His settlement was bare bones. He is to be paid until the end of this year, an amount that equals nearly $24,000. Makes you sick to your stomach…doesn’t it? But the settlement is good for Llano County Tax payers, and it is good because five more teachers would not have to be fired (RIFT’ed) this December. Only five more families you say? What the heck, we have got to get our pint of blood. For those that want that from this situation, put your name in the column with “I do not care about LISD, I want everyone to suffer”.

Please read this carefully, and please, if you really understand this, pass it on.
#1…Patton’s contract is still valid in any courtroom in Texas. A person could be a serial killer, and not be out on bail, and it would not change his state contract. It should, and with more courtroom time, it could be proved he did not deserve it. But please remember, Patton’s lone conviction gets a look-see with his appeal. That comes up in January. Add $10,000 more to the $24,000.

#2…Patton dropped all of his demands …such as LISD paying past, present and future attorney fees. What do we owe? Maybe $90,000 for the next 6 months. Why? Because it is in his contract. You people out there think, as I too have said, “just stop paying him and his attorneys!!!! Ok, that said, every businessperson knows it would not end there. Patton himself has used the word injunction in front of his friends. He could easily have dragged that out 6 more months. That one part, another 3 months lets’ say. Now we are at $64,000.

#3…the hearing process has been estimated to cost LISD the next 90 days $72,000. Now, that goes away. Patton no longer works for the school district, so neither party has to show “cause” for termination. Now we are at $136,000.

#4. Patton’s annuity policy comes due and to be paid in January. $10,000. It is in his contract…..$146,000.

#5…And through all of this, I have only added “hearing attorney fees”…. not another $15,000 estimated just by the amount of time the Patton situation takes on a monthly, on going basis. Also, I did not put any “Patton attorney fees” in this mix.
Had this gone down as it may have, place this situation to May 1,’04; LISD is facing a worst amount of $300,000. And what if Patton won his appeal? Add $320,000 still owed on his contract, plus the three more years of his annuity policy. Is anyone still counting?

Several months ago I said the settlement with Patton could be close to $500,000.
Without knowing anything for sure, and from gossip, I have been told from a Patton friend that had Patton’s first run at the LISD Board been accepted, he would have received $350,000. This settlement, as bad as it may stick in some of our throats, of $24,000 is the best for LISD. And the best for five families that still will have jobs in Llano come Christmas. If you are one of those that has forget the human toll over the past 15 months, you have missed the whole meanness of this situation.

Does all of this go away now? You miss the point again, and many have in Llano. Llano…LISD is not a prosecutor here. The school board cannot bring charges. The school board cannot “pursue” criminal activity. That is not their job. Some of the names in the hat for the school board position want to play cop. Some want to be investigators. Some have had their 15 minutes of fame pass by, and they want to have the sunshine back on them. Some have done yeoman’s work, but it is time to move on. I am hopeful that the Committee making recommendations to the school board will look for people without an agenda. I hope they will look for people that have never attended a school board meeting in the last 15 months. I hope they look for people that only want one thing. For LISD to teach our children how to read …write…and do some ‘rithmetic! I hope they choose people that love kids, and don’t hate grown-ups. I hope they pick people that want a dollars worth of education for a dollars worth of taxes. I hope they want well-rounded students with opportunities to participate in sports, and bands, and excel classes, and UIL competions, without handcuffing the teachers and coaches about funding. I hope they know about hiring teachers, and administrators with one-year contracts, and no perks. I hope they love Llano, and all that we stand for. And we do stand for something. We stand for all of the above, and it is time that we got on with educating our children, and place the responsibility of the other stuff to law enforcement agencies that have that responsibility. I hope that December 31, 2003 is the end of a time for LISD and Jack Patton.
